Study purpose

We are doing this study to learn more about emotion and social behavior in adolescents. Participants may earn up to $494.

what does the study involve for adolescents?

  • Complete 4 assessments over the course of the study, some of which involve the use of EEG, eye-tracking, and heart rate measurement tools. 

  • Install the Effortless Assessment of Risk States (EARS) app to passively collect data about smartphone use.

  • Complete periodic surveys sent through push notifications to one's phone. 

who is eligible to participate?

  • Healthy Adolescents

    • Ages 13-18

    • English speaking

    • Right handed

    • Android phone or iOS phone (iPhone 7 or newer)

  • Adolescents with a Depression History

    • Ages 13-18

    • English speaking

    • Right handed

    • Android phone or iOS phone (iPhone 7 or newer)

MOBILE ASSESSMENT FOR THE PREDICTION OF SUICIDE

Study purpose

Suicide is the second leading cause of death among adolescents, but little is known about factors that increase risk for suicide. Recent advancements, however, may allow us to detect suicidal thoughts and behaviors in real time by monitoring teens’ smartphone use.

Participants may earn up to $625.

what does the study involve for adolescents?

  • Complete 4 assessments over the course of the study.

  • Install the Effortless Assessment of Risk States (EARS) app. The EARS app passively collects data about smartphone use. Data will be collected for 6 months.

  • Complete periodic surveys sent through push notifications to one's phone. 

who is eligible to participate?

  • Ages 13-18

  • English speaking

  • Presence of mood, anxiety, and/or substance (drug or alcohol) symptoms

  • Android phone or iOS phone (iPhone 7 or newer)

SMARTPHONES AND THE BRAIN IN ADOLESCENT SUICIDE

Study purpose

This study is designed to understand aspects of brain function that result in some adolescents experiencing difficulties with depression and suicide. Participants may earn up to $784.

what does the study involve for adolescents?

  • Complete a mental health interview over Zoom.

  • Complete a Magnetic Resonance Imaging (MRI) scan.

  • Install the Effortless Assessment of Risk States (EARS) app to passively collect data about smartphone use for three months.

  • Complete five brief follow-up assessments that would be completed by Zoom at 1-, 2-, 3-, 6-, and 12- months after the initial interview.

who is eligible to participate?

  • Healthy Adolescents

    • Ages 13-17

    • English-speaking

    • Android phone or iOS phone (iPhone 7+ or newer)

    • No MRI contra-indications (e.g. implanted metal, facial piercings that cannot be removed
